A Short Sweet Story of St. Valentine

     "For me?
      Aw, shucks!"

A long time ago in the the second century in the city of Rome there lived a bishop named Valentine.  Bishop Valentine was a generally good man and certainly no bishopric, but he is remembered today more for a unique talent he possessed than for any positive shepherding of souls he may have achieved.

Valentine was a master maker of world class chocolate.  And since the greatest love of all is love of chocolate (Source: Anybody, except the late Whitney Houston),  he was adored by every man, woman, and child in all the land.

But the townsfolk were concerned.

What if Bishop Valentine were to stop making chocolate and spend more time shepherding souls? True, that would save countless folk from hell and damnation but what good was that without chocolate covered marshmallows!

And what if his prices were to go up?  That would cause recession, raise the deficit, and necessitate cuts in government entitlements at a time in history when the only government entitlement was a seat at the Coliseum that wasn't on the field.

So the people of Rome developed a special custom to show Bishop Valentine how much they loved him. Every year on his birthday, February 14, each resident of Rome would buy a red rose and present it to Valentine while simultaneously offering to him deep personal words of great affection:

"Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I love you, Dear Valentine,
And your Mr. Goodbar too!"

"My Sweet Valentine,
 So  forever divine,
Just dip my nuts in your chocolate,
And always be mine!"

"Oh, Darling Valentine,
I am your fan,
You always melt in my mouth
and not in my hand."

One year, however,  a humble Roman named Minimis actually forgot Valentine's Day.

Remembering finally that it was February 14, Minimis hurried over to Valentine's Chocolate Shoppe clutching a red rose, but got there minutes too late.  Minimis flung himself upon the street and began sobbing.  He felt he would never again taste the Bishop's exquisite chocolate.

"Chocolate!  Chocolate!" cried out Minimis. "At this point I'll even take the stuff the Jewish people put in their Hanukkah Gelt, which tastes worse than eating actual coinage!"

At that moment, a pretty young girl named Dee was passing by. She had expressed her adoration for Valentine earlier that day and was carrying with her a box of  assorted chocolates from the good bishop. Dee took pity upon Minimis and bade him sample a sample from the sampler.

Enthralled by her gesture, Minimis took the lovely rose that he had intended to give to Valentine and presented it to Dee.  And as he did, he spoke the words that he had planned to say to the bishop:

"Be My Valentine,
 Our hearts entwine,
  Slurp a chocolate covered cherry,
 Right off my vine!"

Minimis and Dee smiled at one another.  They looked into each other's eyes.

And then the two of them had sex like wild animals!

Nothing Dee Minimis about that (Ouch!)

Soon all throughout Rome couples on Valentine's Day began following the example of Dee and Minimis. One of the two would give chocolate to the other and receive back a rose.  The other would give a rose and receive chocolate.  They would refer to each other as "their Valentines."

And then they'd go at it with of  the fury of gladiators who like each other a little too much at the end of the day,  provided they were still breathing.

In a year or two the smarter couples began dispensing with the roses and each person would both give and receive chocolate.  And then do it even longer!

In just a few years no one gave roses to Valentine any longer.  This actually suited the good bishop just fine because the chocolate business was booming better than ever, and truth to tell, St. Valentine --- as he came to be called ---  actually hated roses.

Why?

They always tended to give him bishoprics.

I think this is where we came in.

Bottle o' Batteries

I got very charged up when I saw the prompt for this week's Friday Fictioneers and thought I'd be positive rather than my usual negative about it.

Yeah, I hate that sentence too.

But I'll push it further:  hope you get a charge out of the story below powered by the prompt above.

If you don't, frankly I'll be shocked.

Bottle o' Batteries

Exiting the neighborhood hardware store with a large glass jar clasped under one arm, Ted ran into his friend Michael Farris in the parking lot.

"Hey, Ted," said Michael, "I see you bought the new Eveready Bottle o' Batteries too."

"Well, when you see how jammed full of all different types and sizes of batteries it is, how can you go wrong for a buck?"

"Yeah, that's what I thought too," began Michael ....

"Problem is it's a crap shoot, you can't really tell what you're getting."

"Actually, Ted, it's worse than that."

"What?"

"The center of the jar doesn't contain any batteries at all!"

"Oh, gee, what is it, full of cardboard?"

"Nah.  Hundreds and hundreds of wrapped Godiva chocolates."

"Damn, ripped off again!" shouted Ted, dropping the jar to the parking surface below.

Cupid, Draw Back Your Bow

Boy, I'm bummed!

Yes, of course I'm freezing my tushie off! It’s February, Zeus damn it, and I’m only wearing a loin cloth!

My name's Cupid, how the hell are ya?

I am the Big Kahuna of St. Valentine's Day, the lamest holiday ever. A commercial pit stop on the calendar artificially constructed to sell greeting cards, chocolate, roses, and jewelry.

How do I hate thee, Valentine's Day? Let me count the ways.

For the holiday that supposedly has a heart, when it comes to single people you are heartless.  All around them they see nothing but couples gazing ardently into each other's eyes and pawing one other passionately.

I do what I can to help out, but I am just one cherub. The only Significant Other most single people wind up with on Valentine’s Day is the other that’s at the other end of their arm.

Married couples fare no better with thee, Valentine's Day.

Of any ten random married couples, four hate each other with the same passionate intensity that Tracy Morgan hates being funny. For them, Valentine’s Day begins with breakfast at a table that becomes progressively longer each year until finally one of the two is shoved out on the front lawn.

(Thanks a lot for coming up with that one, Orson Welles!)

Having exchanged the requisite box of chocolates or roses --- often with specified extra thorns --- they repair to an evening of internecine conflict the likes of which I haven't seen since the Peloponnesian War!

Of the ten random couples, four profess deep feelings to each other that they do indeed have --- for other people!

The husband presents flowers to the wife that he'd love to be proffering to the woman in Marketing with the big tits and the wife gives chocolates to the husband she dreams of tendering in person to Ryan Reynolds.

If they do it all, it is Ryan Reynolds and Melissa Goldstein in Marketing who are actually having the sex.

Finally, of the ten random couples, two do indeed love each other with the same deep romantic passion that an orthodontist feels for anyone who's English!

Sometimes --- ahem ---  my arrows do work wonders!

These two count the micro-seconds until they can once again be enveloped in one another's arms, smooch like Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr, and do the deed for hours on end like the mightiest of Olympians!

Frankly, these folks don't need Valentine's Day. What they could use is a break.

Their kids haven't seen them since August.

So what about you?  Where do you fall in the spectrum?

I thought so!

Well, that's what my arrows are for, my friend.

Shall I take aim?

Regis for President!

Hail to the Chief!

If you've been anywhere near a television this entire week, you know one thing:

The next President of the United States should be
 Regis Philbin!

And I am today announcing that I am the volunteer head of the newly-formed  "Committee to  Draft Regis Philbin For President of the United States - 2012!"

Here's why Regis is the most qualified person in the nation to be your next President:

1) America loves him!  You've seen it all:  Regis is a combination Joe DiMaggio, Harrison FordAstronaut John Glenn, George ClooneyBeatles, Elvis, Lady GagaBatmanScarlett Johansson, {insert whoever you think is really cool here but it's probably Regis anyway so don't bother},  and of course,  Justin (Beiber and Timberlake!).  He is all things to all people.

Regis is chocolate if chocolate were a person!

2) Would that face lie to you?

3) You can't help but like him.   Think Ahmadinejad could resist the Regis charm?

"Gelman!  Gelman!  Pull up a chair for my friend Mahmoud!   Mahmoud, we don't want to go out of control!  You don't want nuclear weapons,  Mahmoud,  what you really want is a night on the town in New York City with Kelly Ripa!"

Missile crisis defused.

4) He knows how to work with vice-presidential types.  And if he could work with Kathie Lee Gifford,  he could easily handle Dick Cheney.

5) Gridlock?  What Gridlock?  Regis could bring Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher back together by 9:07 including a commercial break.  Don't be surprised if  Congressman Barney Frank and Newt Gingrich aren't next!

6) His wife Joy would  make a lovely First Lady.  As she's demonstrated from her countless televison appearances, Joy Philbin is poised, intelligent, and at 70 still even  a bit hot.  And if anything should happen to her, Kathie Lee would lose no time leaping in to fill the void!

7) He appears to still have pretty good hair.  America will never elect a bald president other than one that was more or less responsible for winning World War II.  Regis' hair looks darn good for somebody his age, and if it isn't all his, who the hell cares?

8) He is a friend to the Jews.  Gelman and Joey Bishop, to name just two.

9) He's worked with many beautiful women over the years.  Who knows?  Maybe Regis could help us older guys get chicks!

10) He needs a job.

Just a minute, folks, I think I hear Regis calling me!

Nah, he was just calling for Gelman.

Which is a good thing!  Because, folks, I have an awful lot of work to do and ...

 I'm out of control!

Like Sex for Chocolate

What’s the big deal about sex?

Why has it built and toppled empires, ruined the lives and careers of world figures from Eliot Spitzer to Adam and Eve, and dominated the thoughts and actions of people throughout all of recorded time?

After all, it’s nothing more than a transitory pleasurable experience in a relatively small part of the body.

Eating chocolate, on the other hand, produces a much more sustained period of pleasure which extends from your mouth and taste buds all the way down to your tummy!

Sometimes I wish rather than sex chocolate were our primary motivating drive.

“Hey, Brad,” I said to my buddy the other day. “How was your date last night? You eat chocolate with her?”

“What do you think, dude?  Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, you name it.  She even.…umm....truffled me!”

“Wow!” Not every woman will do that.

“Seems like you’re eating chocolate with a lot of different women these days,” I said. “What’s your secret?”

“Once you get ‘em into your apartment, you put on the soft music, pour on the charm, then bring out the Godiva! Before you know it you’re both headed up the Hershey Highway, and she's loving those nuts!’’

I had to admit I was jealous.

I hadn’t eaten chocolate with a woman in years. Frankly, I’d been spending a lot of time at home on a website featuring this super hot redhead taking on an entire Whitman’s Sampler!

Naturally the whole time I’m frantically pounding down M&Ms.

Come on, don’t act so shocked!  Like you haven't done that too!

Just about every guy on the planet wants to eat chocolate with as many attractive women as he can as often as he can. Kinsey and Masters & Johnson tell us that women love chocolate just as much as men do, but most women want to be in love with a guy before they’ll hop on his Mounds or eat his Almond Joy!

Oh, fudge it all!

Even in the chocolate world, men are from Mars and women are from Hershey's.
