The Three Doors (FF)

FF-Flash Fiction

"Say, where's Jim?"

"There's only three of us now, Robby.  Don't you remember?  Jim's been gone over 40 years."

"Oh, that's right!  Just like poor Otis."

"True.  Actually, there's only two of us now.  Ray died earlier this year as well."

"Oh, gee, that's right. Then why are there three doors here?"

"Because this was the last picture of us, Robby, taken just this spring."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The picture prompt for this week's Friday Fictioneers gave me the opportunity to cheat a bit with this post and bring it in at a scant 65 words, and also to pay a small tribute to Ray Manzarek, who passed away this spring, whose keyboards were as responsible for the unique sound of the Doors as Jim Morrison himself.
Now I want to tell all the people to click here for the posts of the other Fictioneers which are bound to touch you, babe and light your fire right until The End.
Okay, goodbye, I love you, and I'll try for a real story next week!
Dear Perry,
When your strange, faces come out of the rain...when you're strange. In any case, hello, I love you. Nice tribute.
Shalom,
Rochelle
It is a real tale. wonderful story
Nicely done to carve out a story in just 52 words -- many times I have a hard time cutting down to 100 words! And, as Rochelle wrote, a good tribute to a rockin' band. I agree that the keyboards imprinted the Doors' sound -- once you hear them grooving, you know immediately that it's a Doors tune.
Gotta confess, I didn't get this until I read Rochelle's comment. Wrong generation, maybe? :) I like it though.
Nice one and a great tribute there. Welldown.
Except for Cher maybe, though she has a bit of help. Thanks, Sandra!
It was either the Doors or Monty Hall, didn't seem like much of a contest. Thanks, Doug!
Whew, after all this, please just show me the way to the next whiskey bar! Thanks, Rochelle.
Perry Block said...
Thanks, but I don't know about wonderful. How about "wondrous?" Yeah, maybe wondrous.
Yes, Manzarek's role in the group was somewhat underrated due to Morrison's overpowering personality. But it seemed like a fitting way to use the prompt other than doing a parody of "Let's Make a Deal." Thanks!
Very Clever Writing!
I realized that some might not understand it. That's why I nixed my originally intended post on Enrico Caruso! Thanks.
Perry Block said...
Thanks, I thought it was a bit of fun along with a tribute.
I don't know about "very clever." "Exceedingly clever beyond compare?"
.
Thanks for writing.
Gee that was short. Are you saving words for next week, Perry? I don't know if you and I qualify as great minds, but we did think alike on our stories this week. Now, if only Scarlett Johansson would "Love me Two times" it would be a perfect for The End.
Perry Block said...
I think the link between our minds must be "Stronger than Dirt!" Anyway it isn't just "poor Otis dead and gone" any more, it's Jim and Ray now as well. As for Scarlett J, even though "people are strange," doubt we'd get much more from her than "shrug me two times."
A "Duh" one here, isn't it?
Yeah, I realize it may be for some. Not looking forward to the time when it gets to be for everyone but me!
Had to read a little about the Doors to get it.. but of course Jim was one of those club 27.. ones.
Perry Block said...
Yep, along with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, and I guess a bunch of others. I knew this post would be a bit elusive for some, but it was hard to pass up. For more on the story, see Russell's post ... http://russellgayer.com/2013/09/26/break-on-through/
Nice tribute, Perry. You're always have a trick up your sleeve. Goodbye for now!
Perry Block said...
Wait, Amy, stay! I got another trick!
Boy, I did not have a clue of what this was all about, but in the end it is a charming little Ode to the Doors. However, I have to add, that I knew Ray Manzarek and he was the biggest asshole going - although you are right, his keyboards really made the music of The Doors.
Perry Block said...
You knew him?!!! That's incredible! Can you tell me more? Please!
Really enjoyed this, and how is this not a "real" story? Love the quick, sharp dialogue and the tie to the Doors. Like many others, I went with something more predictable... Yours is very unexpected. Lit my fire. ;-) Nice!
Perry Block said...
Thank you, Dawn! Well, it is a bit of trick playing on the name rather than telling a story based on the prompt. And I didn't think your story was predictable at all in that the choice of doors signaled something quite different than in most of the other stories. Good job!
