A Day at the Beach

He had always loved the beach.

Sitting by ocean's edge, feeling the sun upon his skin, splashing into the water, riding the waves. And buying ice cream about mid-day from the pony-tailed man yelling

"Eskimo Pies!  Get your Eskimo Pies,"

and looking at all the pretty girls in their skimpy bikinis, always getting progressively younger.  Well, not much he could do about that.

Damn near perfect.  Each and every time.

Even the walk itself over the boardwalk bridge to the vast expanse of seemingly endless sand before him normally filled him with anticipation and delight.

Unfortunately,  today he was playing golf.

  1. This makes me wish I was at the beach instead of freezing here in western MA. If he plays golf like I do, I can see why it was unfortunate;)

    1. "That vast expanse of seemingly endless sand before him" may be a tip off as to how well he plays ...

      Stay warm!

    2. Thanks! Warm is a losing battle around here these days. I'm lucky that the golf courses I play don't have terribly many sand traps, though I'd rather be in the sand than have to hit over water. I can feel his pain..:)

  2. Sand trap, eh? I second jenniesisler. This makes me long for the beach.

    1. I second both of you. If I have to spend a day in the sand, I'd rather be at the beach!

  3. A beach is way better than golf poor guy. :-)

    1. Except maybe he can get something a bit stronger after the round at the golf course than an Eskimo Pie!

    1. Yep, and nothing better than buying that ice cream on the beach on a hot summer's day, no matter how over-priced it is...

  5. He made his choice. I doubt anyone forced him to play golf. What's unfortunate is the age difference between me and the girls in bikinis keeps getting wider and wider, just like my waistline.

    1. Look on the bright side, Russell. If you just pig out all you want, your waistline will be way wider!

  6. Girls looking progressively younger --- no kidding! I feel that a LOT these days!

    1. And guess what? You're going to feel it a whole LOTTER in days ahead!

  7. Lots of fun, Perry. I love the ending. I played golf once and the first 9 were all like that, starting with my opening "drive." The back 9 went pretty well, but that was enough for me.

    1. I got you, Janet. Once I was in the sand trap so long, a pony-tailed guy actually did come along calling "Eskimo Pies! Get your Eskimo Pies!"

      Thanks for writing.

  8. Dear Perry,
Anyone who uses Beatles lyrics in anyway, shape or form is all right in my book. I enjoyed your story, too. He must've been playing golf with his boss to make it more important than going to the beach.

    1. Nah, his boss didn't force him to play.

It was just A Day in the Life.

  11. Perry, this is hysterical. I submitted one for this drabble contest, as well. Can't wait to read more of your work.

Not to be annoying, but check mine out if you can spare half a second.

  13. I'm guessing he was forced into playing golf by his boss. That's probably the only way I'd play. I'd take the beach any day.

    1. But there's actually more sand at the golf course. At least the way this guy plays.

  20. Hi Perry,
I see you were the first one to arrive at the party. You must be a fast typist! Your story is a wistful description of a perfect day at the beach. Maybe the golfer will end up in a few sand traps! Ron

    1. Ron,

Yeah, I was the first one to arrive at the party, but I didn't so much as bring a bottle of cheap wine or even cupcakes.

So I'm still a lousy party guest! The golfer (I guess surrogate me) has landed in the Mother of All Sand Traps, so I guess I got what I deserved ...

  21. Very good. Personally I prefer the beach. In fact I'm with Mark Twain who said "golf is a good walk wasted".

    1. It isn't even a good walk with all the starting and stopping. Plus you get all that sand in your contact lenses!

    1. Well, into the trap for sure. You can't see water in the prompt itself, only endless sand.

But to answer your question, hitting it into the ocean? No problem for me even if the course is in Montana!
