He had always loved the beach.
Sitting by ocean's edge, feeling the sun upon his skin, splashing into the water, riding the waves. And buying ice cream about mid-day from the pony-tailed man yelling
"Eskimo Pies! Get your Eskimo Pies,"
and looking at all the pretty girls in their skimpy bikinis, always getting progressively younger. Well, not much he could do about that.
Damn near perfect. Each and every time.
Even the walk itself over the boardwalk bridge to the vast expanse of seemingly endless sand before him normally filled him with anticipation and delight.
Unfortunately, today he was playing golf.

Good fun and nice descriptions!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. See you in the sand trap!
DeleteThis makes me wish I was at the beach instead of freezing here in western MA. If he plays golf like I do, I can see why it was unfortunate;)
ReplyDelete"That vast expanse of seemingly endless sand before him" may be a tip off as to how well he plays ...
DeleteStay warm!
Thanks! Warm is a losing battle around here these days. I'm lucky that the golf courses I play don't have terribly many sand traps, though I'd rather be in the sand than have to hit over water. I can feel his pain..:)
DeleteSand trap, eh? I second jenniesisler. This makes me long for the beach.
ReplyDeleteI second both of you. If I have to spend a day in the sand, I'd rather be at the beach!
DeleteA beach is way better than golf poor guy. :-)
ReplyDeleteExcept maybe he can get something a bit stronger after the round at the golf course than an Eskimo Pie!
DeleteEskimos on the Beach... perfect!
ReplyDeleteYep, and nothing better than buying that ice cream on the beach on a hot summer's day, no matter how over-priced it is...
DeleteHe made his choice. I doubt anyone forced him to play golf. What's unfortunate is the age difference between me and the girls in bikinis keeps getting wider and wider, just like my waistline.
ReplyDeleteLook on the bright side, Russell. If you just pig out all you want, your waistline will be way wider!
DeleteGirls looking progressively younger --- no kidding! I feel that a LOT these days!
ReplyDeleteAnd guess what? You're going to feel it a whole LOTTER in days ahead!
DeleteLots of fun, Perry. I love the ending. I played golf once and the first 9 were all like that, starting with my opening "drive." The back 9 went pretty well, but that was enough for me.
ReplyDeletejanet
I got you, Janet. Once I was in the sand trap so long, a pony-tailed guy actually did come along calling "Eskimo Pies! Get your Eskimo Pies!"
DeleteThanks for writing.
Dear Perry,
ReplyDeleteAnyone who uses Beatles lyrics in anyway, shape or form is all right in my book. I enjoyed your story, too. He must've been playing golf with his boss to make it more important than going to the beach.
shalom,
Rochelle
Nah, his boss didn't force him to play.
DeleteIt was just A Day in the Life.
it's a fantastic, very real description of the beach and of course, you managed again to make a fab ending ^^
ReplyDeleteJust call me "the Fab One!" I have no idea what that means!
Delete"I don't play any sport where water is a hazard" unknown fisherman. Great description of the beach Perry. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteI haven't even gotten to the part yet about all the water hazards.
DeleteThanks, Tom!
Perry, this is hysterical. I submitted one for this drabble contest, as well. Can't wait to read more of your work.
ReplyDelete- Cullin
Not to be annoying, but check mine out if you can spare half a second.

Thank you so much, but I don't know the word "drabble." Sounds hysterical in and of itself!
DeleteThanks for writing, Cullen.
Makes me wanna hit the beach this weekend if the weather holds up. Very nice image you've painted in the story
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jennifer! Makes me want to go to the beach this weekend too except for the fact it's 13 degrees. I appreciate your commenting.
DeleteI'm guessing he was forced into playing golf by his boss. That's probably the only way I'd play. I'd take the beach any day.
ReplyDeleteWell, it was time to try something different for him. If he ever gets out of that epic sand trap, don't think he'll try it again!
DeleteFunny! lol

The beach any day for me. Nice one Perry, started my day with a grin.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandra. Even though the guy in the story is grimacing!
DeleteQuite an interesting guy.. :-) Wonder what made him play golf today..
ReplyDeleteMasochism.
DeleteSo cute. Loved the ending. But I'd take the beach over golf any day.
ReplyDeleteBut there's actually more sand at the golf course. At least the way this guy plays.
DeleteThanks for writing, Shirley.
A good take on the picture, it made me smile.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're smiling! He's still taking strokes trying to get out.
DeleteLove the eskimo pies! Not so sure about golf, though :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure. Eskimo pies all the way!
DeleteHi Perry,
ReplyDeleteI see you were the first one to arrive at the party. You must be a fast typist! Your story is a wistful description of a perfect day at the beach. Maybe the golfer will end up in a few sand traps! Ron
Ron,
DeleteYeah, I was the first one to arrive at the party, but I didn't so much as bring a bottle of cheap wine or even cupcakes.
So I'm still a lousy party guest! The golfer (I guess surrogate me) has landed in the Mother of All Sand Traps, so I guess I got what I deserved ...
Very good. Personally I prefer the beach. In fact I'm with Mark Twain who said "golf is a good walk wasted".
ReplyDeleteIt isn't even a good walk with all the starting and stopping. Plus you get all that sand in your contact lenses!
DeleteEskimo pies!
ReplyDeleteHow I wish winter gets the hell out of here! I want Eskimo pies in the summer sun.
Nice work
Thanks. Have one now, though, and turn the heat immediately after up to 87 or more ...
Deleteyou hit one into the ocean ?
ReplyDeleteWell, into the trap for sure. You can't see water in the prompt itself, only endless sand.
DeleteBut to answer your question, hitting it into the ocean? No problem for me even if the course is in Montana!
too bad he was out playing golf...not only missed the chicks but Eskimo Pies!! enjoyed your story...<3
ReplyDeleteYep, no chicks in the sand traps!
DeletePerry, you've given new meaning to the 'surprise ending.' Cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks. The only surprise left is how many shots it'll take me to get out!
Deletehahaha, I'm moving right along, feeling all sentimental and bam, the ending. great job. "unfortunately today he was playing golf" what a perfect last line.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'll take a humble bow now ...
ReplyDeleteTerrific descriptions that really pull the reader's in. Great post.
ReplyDeleteYes, they pull the reader in like the trap pulled in my ball!
DeleteThanks for writing.
Nice one. Still smiling here.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I was sick of it long ago, but I'm glad you're still smiling!
